Struck so many Chords!

Hope you don’t mind me contacting you like this, but I wanted to thank you for Tom’s book.


I just finished my copy and I don’t think I’ve read a fishing book so well written and which struck so many chords. I’m guessing I may be biased as I spent my teens fishing the Wye in the late 70’s and early 80’s, primarily around Builth Wells, staying with fishing friends in a caravan on the banks during the school holidays. This was in the days before the barbel were there, but the chub & dace fishing was great along with Grayling and the odd trout. And it truly is a fantastic river, my sister moved to Ross a few years ago so I do get a chance to get back.


The chapter on the close season, was spot on. I shared this with a few fishing friends and they all have the same sentiment. Although I do think it was more the commercial side of the sport that put the pressure on to have it dropped, rather than the anglers themselves. The owners of the carp ponds didn’t want to restrict their earnings to 9 months of the year. Refreshing, too, these days to read a book that doesn’t mention carp!


Anyway, I just thought I should let you know how much pleasure the book has given me and I’m sure I shall be reading it again when I get it back from my friends who all want a turn! I’m sure they will enjoy it as much as me.

I wanted to let you know that I received my copy of Tom’s book a couple of days ago (waited until the 16th) and have just finished reading it last night. I can only think of one thing to say. Outstanding.


The design, look and feel of it is spot on. I’d expect nothing less from you. The writing is excellent - unique, I’d say, for the mix of subject matter and narrative. Don’t think I’ve ever enjoyed a book so much, although I guess it was a little more personal for me, having known you and some of your exploits. In fact, I found some of it a little emotional...


Well done mate. I’m very proud of what you’ve achieved there, and so should you be. If you don’t win an award for it there is something wrong!

Hi David,

The leather arrived yesterday and you've done another great job.

I'm also just coming to the end of the book and it's one of the best angling books I've read for a long time. It's a refreshing change to find a fisherman who can actually write well and please pass on my compliments to Robert if you speak to him.

He's got great taste in music too - I've been a big Neil Young fan for many a year!

How are your other projects progressing? My better half is starting to speak to me again so I probably need to spend some more money...
